The Energy and Sustainability Manager plays a key role in developing strategies to support sustainable development and environmental stewardship at all BCIT campuses.
Working in close partnership with the school and other BCIT departments, the Energy and Sustainability Manager prepares reports and policy proposals concerning the realization of the Environmental Stewardship and Sustainable Practices memorandum of agreement. In addition, the Manager will have the opportunity to implement a work program addressing energy, materials consumption, water, waste and green space, as outlined in the goals and objectives of the Greening Campuses Strategic Plan, and to engage staff and students in these initiatives.
The Manager will also have the opportunity to oversee development of curriculum that advances the state of practice in sustainability and prepares the next generation of practitioners to contribute to a sustainable future.
This position is subject to renewal of BC Hydro energy management support funding and is determined from year to year.

QUALIFICATIONS

 Master’s Degree in Business or Environmental Management (or its equivalent) or registration as a Professional Engineer or Registered Engineering Technologist is preferred

 Journeyman Electrician or Certified Technician (HVAC, instrumentation, or other relevant discipline) may be considered

 Five to ten years’ work experience in organizational change management or the operation, maintenance and management of electrical and lighting systems or mechanical systems including HVAC systems and cooling plants, or experience working as an engineering technologist on mechanical and/or electrical building systems

 Completion of energy efficiency training such as AEE Certified Energy Manager, CIET Energy Management Training or LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) professional accreditation is also an asset

 Familiarity and knowledge of energy efficient technologies and a demonstrated interest in energy efficiency coupled with environmental stewardship are also beneficial

 Knowledgeable about electric and natural gas rate structures, utility and government energy efficiency funding programs; capable of financial analysis including full cost accounting and life-cycle assessment

 Capable of managing and identifying energy and materials savings opportunities in buildings systems and/or utilities

 Excellent verbal communication, interpersonal, leadership and presentation skills, including the use of common computer software such as Microsoft Word and Excel

 Demonstrated supervisory experience, project management experience for small capital projects, and policy development experience including experience in writing detailed reports

 Experience in the development of educational curricula is an asset, and capability to track progress on multiple initiatives is essential

 Knowledge related to water conservation, landscaping, soil science, and ecosystem restoration are also considered an advantage

 Familiarity with concepts related to Ecological Footprint Assessment, The Natural Step, and other related sustainability management approaches are also an advantage.
