AMERICORPS WEATHERIZATION POSITION (Deadline 9/19/11)
This position is part of the Vermont Housing & Conservation Board AmeriCorps, which places AmeriCorps members in sponsoring non-profit affordable housing and environmental conservation and education organizations around the state.
CVOEO Mission: The Mission of CVOEO is to address fundamental issues of economic, social, and racial justice and to work with low-income people to achieve economic independence.
CVOEO Weatherization -- Reducing energy costs for low-income Vermonters: CVOEO Weatherization is the local service provider for Vermont’s Weatherization Program in the Champlain Valley of Vermont, including Addison, Chittenden, Franklin and Grand Isle Counties. Vermont’s Weatherization Program uses state, national, and utility resources to deliver comprehensive energy services to qualified low-income households. The program is offered at no-cost to qualified low-income households.
Position Goals: This position will have the exciting opportunity to work in and amongst the many areas within the Weatherization Department, including our new and exciting projects (e.g. solar installs, smart grid, etc.). The goals of this position are to provide support in a variety of areas within the range of weatherization (Wx) programs thru client intake, outreach, advocacy, energy efficiency education, assisting with energy audits, and administrative duties while learning the comprehensive nature of Vermont’s Weatherization Assistance Program (WAP).
Essential Position Functions:
· Provide cross-departmental support for all program areas while learning the different aspects of Wx. This will include working on such projects as:
o MARS (Major Appliance Retrofit Service) – project that identifies and replaces large, inefficient appliances (i.e. frig, washer, dryer) for qualified residents;
o Smart grid – education, awareness, and data tracking for pilot project;
o SERC (Sustainable Energy Resources for Consumers) -- Energy Efficiency as well as Health and Safety Client Education, Solar Panel site qualification, and product education;
o Supporting energy audits and Wx auditors on/off-site;
o VFEP (VT Fuel Efficiency Partnership) audit and project assistance for multi- family buildings;
o Emergency Heating System Grant Program -- Support both the administrative and technical program aspects. This can include responding to client inquiries for emergency heating services, conducting client intake and returning calls to clients needing assistance, managing data entry, client tracking, working with contractors, processing payments, and assisting auditors in technical analyses.
· Assist the Administrative Manager with outreach, marketing, client eligibility verification, data entry, client education, office tasks, and other duties as assigned.
· Provide outreach, assistance, and educational opportunities to clients on our waitlist.
· Complete home visits to low income households to encourage and educate homeowners on efficiency as well as health and safety measures that can be done to a home both personally and by professionals.
· Track client outreach and education in conjunction with existing systems to ensure collaborate and prevent work-related inefficiencies.
Marginal Position Functions:
· Research opportunities for CVOEO Wx to collaborate with other local organizations and business to promote energy savings and assistance for low-income Vermonters.
· Participate as part of the Safety Committee.
· Take part in all staff meetings, providing assistance in tracking and monitoring staff meetings, including taking notes.
· Support the Director in projects as they arise and are mutually beneficial.
Desired Qualifications:
· Bachelor’s Degree in areas of environmental studies, sciences, and/or education, social justice, or related.
· Positive, can-do attitude, outgoing nature, high energy, and team player.
· Be organized, motivated and as self-directed as possible.
· Excellent written and verbal communication skills along with superb attention to detail required.
· Ability to communicate effectively and work with a variety of individuals, including staff and clients.
· Have knowledge of or passion for energy and climate change issues and a desire to reduce energy burdens for low-income Vermonters.
· Willingness to educate Vermonter’s on the benefits of energy efficiency in their homes.
· Proficient in word processing, database, spreadsheet applications as well as electronic file and records.
· Have experience or sincere interest in being part of a diverse team, working on diverse issues.
Minimum Qualifications:
· Be US citizen (or have permanent resident status; call with questions about this);
· Be at least 18 years of age upon entering the Pre-Service Orientation (there is no upper age limit), or 17 years of age with written parental permission that has been verified by phone;
· Be a high school graduate or have a GED certificate, or be willing to work towards their GED as part of their service-year successful completion requirement. A member cannot have dropped out of high school to join AmeriCorps. If a member has a documented medical reason/professional opinion why they cannot finish high school, they might be eligible; call in this case;
· Be committed to the VHCB AmeriCorps program, and its ethic of service and personal and professional development of its participants;
· Have the ability and enthusiasm to drive to, attend, and participate in required trainings and events, and be prepared to drive 2-3 hours each way.
Service Conditions: Work will be conducted both in an office setting as well as in the field at client’s houses. There will significant time entering and/or reviewing data and documents on computer. Work will be based mostly out of our Hinesburg office; however, candidate must be willing to also work out of our St. Albans office as well.
Position begins as early as 9/19/11 and ends late August 2012.

_X_Full Time: Requires 1,700 hours for an average of 35.5 hours per week for 11 months. Member will receive a living allowance of $13, 702 (pre-tax), and an education award of $5,550 (pre-tax) upon successful completion of service. Other benefits include health insurance, federal school loan forbearance, and various training opportunities.
